If you feel as if you can’t focus when you meditate then you’re not alone. When people first try meditation they are often surprised by how restless their minds are with many complaining that they can’t stop their thoughts. You’ll be glad to know that this is perfectly normal – we have thousands of thoughts every day, so it’s hardly surprising that they continue to flood our minds when we are trying to still them.
However, the aim of mindfulness meditation is not to stop our thoughts entirely but to become aware of those thoughts without getting carried away by them. This may seem difficult at first, but with practice you can learn to watch the thoughts pass by, just as you would watch a cloud drift past in the sky, simply acknowledging its presence.
For beginners, I would recommend following guided meditations. By placing our focus on someone else’s voice we can avoid getting carried away by the chattering of our own voice in our mind.
