MINDFULNESS is the ability to be fully present, aware of where you are and of what you’re doing, without being overly reactive or overwhelmed by what is going on around you. It has been scientifically proven to help in many areas of life, including the reduction of stress and anxiety and improvement of creativity and concentration. It also increases people’s ability to develop gratitude and kindness in their daily lives.
So, is mindfulness just a fad?
No! Mindfulness has its origins in Eastern meditation practices, dating back to the earliest teachings of Buddha. In the 1970’s, while meditating, Jon Kabat Zinn had the idea of adapting these techniques to the needs of patients suffering from stress. In 1979 he set up a stress reduction clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and so the MBSR (Mind-Based Stress Reduction) program was created.
